- Aged 13 first studies in Chinese painting and calligraphy with Pu-Hsin-yu, one of the last Manchu princes and master of the Northern School.
- Ru Yu, a Zen monk, later introduced him to impressionistic "slash-ink"-painting of the Southern School.
- Soon development of individual creativity by picking-up the tradition of formerly much valued painter-poet-calligraphy-artists.
As one of the leading contemporary Chinese artists he manages to unify modern poetry with Chinese ink painting with profound unbiasedness and technical skill using image orientation of traditional, folk- and contemporary art thus creating his very personal language deeply rooted in surrealistic symbols. This duality of tradition and modernism is an outstanding characteristic in his work and Lo Ch'ing enjoys highest reputation in mainland China as well as in Taiwan and internationally.
Despite dismal depiction in many of his paintings, his humorous attitude towards the confusions and rigors of our time is always visible and his works have made their way into many big museums of the world. Lo Ch'ing's books of poetry have been translated into just under 20 languages.
